new year countdown 2: priorities

New Year Countdown 2: Get your priorities straight

I love this time of year, the lull between Christmas and New Year. It’s a quiet time for a lot of people without too many expectations on us to be everywhere and do everything.

And, curled up on my hot pink sofa, TV remote in one hand and a bowl of fruit and nuts in the other hand, it’s easy to make big plans for the year ahead. This year, I tell myself, I’m going to enrol on a new course, and meet lots of new people, and challenge myself to do new things. And this year I’ll start a plan to read the Bible in a year and keep going past January. This year, I’ll set some long-term goals for my job. And so on and so on.

But the reality is, I won’t do even half of it. Life will get busy with all the things which have to be done, and I’ll forget the ambitious goals and big plans I made.

So this year, I’m going to try something new. I’m going to set my priorities at the start of the year, and I’m going to try to make them realistic. And then I’m going to remind myself of them at the start of every week and month, to keep me on track.

This is going to be my first priority:

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:31-33

My top priority needs to be God: doing what is right for him and his kingdom, and then trusting that he will look after everything else I need.
